Burroughs and Alupoaicei launch Wicca Awareness Month

I just found out according to this release that two authors we hosted in September for Authors@Abunga have launched Wicca Awareness Month. You can check out our archived chat with them here.  See below for details on on the month and how you can get involved.

Dillon Burroughs and Marla Alupoaicei, authors of Generation Hex—Understanding the Subtle Dangers of Wicca, have launched Wicca Awareness Month to help concerned Christians bring light and hope to those within the Wicca religion.

As part of their goal to raise awareness, the authors will discuss Christian perspectives on Wicca in numerous media interviews, including Moody Radio’s Chris Fabry Live! on October 22 and Janet Parshall’s America (Salem Radio) on October 30.  The authors will also post new articles and information on marriageleap.com, including quotes and feedback from Wiccans and former Wiccans, throughout the month.

Are you a cool family man? Then you’ll love HusbandsandDads.com

A few weeks ago I ran across I site that focuses on being a good dad and husband, as such it’s Husbands & Dads.com.  Now, let’s be clear I’m not a dad or a husband, but I do hope to be both one day and the site has some very interesting posts even for me!

I’ve read posts on kids, on health and on marriage, but they’ve even got movie reviews and technology posts.  They’ve really brought together some great content!

Some of the most popular posts right now are: 8 Unique Ways to Help Your Wife Relax, Tips for Dads - How to Soothe a Crying Baby, and Top 10 Most Underrated TV Dads.  They’ve also got a newly launched forum where you can dialog on all types of topics appropriate to being a dad.

So go check them out, and let me know what you think.

We’re always looking for new sites that are family focused, if you’ve got a favorite let me know in the comments!

Sarah Palin - wife, mother, powerhouse

Sarah Palin is a very impressive individual.  I realize my opinion is not sought after in any political circles but I do represent an average voter and I think she is fabulous.  I am a wife and mother – just like her.  I have a strong faith and ethical principles – just like her.  I have family struggles and challenges – just like her. I am an intelligent and powerful woman – just like her.  Ok, so maybe I am not as powerful as she is but the point is that I can relate to her on many levels.

Like most of the country I first saw her when she gave her speech at the Republican National Convention. I found her to be articulate, intelligent, confident and very feminine. Many of things we want our daughters to be. I have a great respect for her and what she has accomplished in her life so far.

Whether or not you agree with where she stands on the issues I would think it’s hard not to be impressed. If you are interested on where she stands on the issues a great resource is OnTheIssues.org. The site provides information where each candidate stands.

There is a new book coming out about Palin called Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down by Kaylene Johnson. It should be available on Abunga.com very soon.  I am looking forward to reading it.

To me, Sarah Palin is an excellent example of what women can accomplish – wife, mother, woman of faith, public servant and just plain powerhouse.  John McCain chose well for his running mate.

I would very much be interested in what you think about her.  Feel free to post a comment.

Help! My Blender is stuck on grind

When my husband and I married 18 months ago we were so excited to start our new life with our blended family. Webster lists multiple definitions for the word blend.  My favorite one in relation to my blended family is “to produce a harmonious effect.”  This is what I strive for on a regular basis.  What I achieve on the other hand is something not quite so tranquil.  Many days it feels like our “blender” is stuck on grind which means “to wear down, polish, or sharpen by friction.”

Friction sometimes rules the day. The good news is my husband and I never for one second thought this was going to be easy.  While we sometimes get stuck on grind for awhile we always eventually remember the word in the middle of that definition for grind: polish.  God is polishing each one of us to produce a harmonious effect. We handle the friction one spark at a time.

It is truly a blessing to be in a marriage where we are both committed to finding the right balance to make the blending of our family to produce a harmonious effect instead of a daily grind.

There are so many resources out there to help with blending families.  My husband and I have sought out several. I recently read an article called Enduring Disharmony by Ron L. Deal which I found to be useful.  I also recently came across the Blending a Family web site by Moe & Paige Becnel.   It had some good information.  Of course Abunga.com has many books on the subject of step-families as well.

I would love to hear about your experience and success stories on blending a family plus any resources you have found helpful. You can post your comments to the blog or send us an email at customerservice@abunga.com.

Christianity Today Awards Top Books for 2008

Christianity Today reviews and picks the top books published in the last year, and yesterday they released the titles for 2008. Not only is this a list, it’s a comprehensive review including the judges thoughts as well as any other coverage such as blogs, articles, etc. This is what CT says about the selection:

This year, 49 publishers nominated 359 titles published in 2007. CT editors selected the top books in each category, and then panels of judges — one panel per category — voted. In the end, we chose 10 winners and gave 11 awards of merit to the books that best shed light on people, events, and ideas that shape evangelical life, thought, and mission. Selections from judges’ comments are below.

Of all the titles on the list, I’m most excited about reading Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy partially because one of the authors, David L Weaver-Zercher is a professor at Messiah College, my alma mater. I also find the Amish people very interesting, and this book should be an interesting read on how a tight knit community handles tremendous loss.

If you like this list you may also be interested in the lists from 2006, and 2007.

Most of what they listed on their site is included below but check out their site for a additional information. Link to the original article.

Enjoy!

2008 Christianity Today Book Awards

Apologetics/Evangelism

There Is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind

by Antony Flew

There Is a God By Antony Flew, Roy Abraham Varghese

Our judges said:

“Makes the philosophical search for God both accessible and exciting. After a meal of Flew’s rich stew of argument and opinion, one lifts a spoonful of most professional apologetics and mutters, ‘Thin soup indeed.’”
